As branch members and many others nationally will be aware, we’re facing a difficult few months ahead with the emergency budget, £6 billion proposed public sector cuts from the new government, and the changes to the Jobcentre Plus structure that has been the focus of this branch for a number of months yet.

It is the responsibility of the trade union movement to be at the front line of defense and so the branch are mulling over ideas to get us into this campaign and fit for purpose.

At the most recent BEC (minutes up soon!), we resolved to increase the level of activity in the branch on a wider scope than at present, responding to our branch members’ comments that they often don’t know what work their reps and officers are up to from one week to the next. We are all for increased democracy and accountability so this website is one of the steps – BEC minutes will now be in the public domain and open to comment from members and anyone else who’s interested.

Furthermore, we are about to send out a questionnaire to branch members regarding starting some branch-led discussion groups outside of work time.

Lastly we are looking at regular members meetings or drop-in sessions across all sites, for us to report back on what work we’ve been doing and for members to bring their collective issues to the table.

So watch this space for more activity, and if you want to get involved, contact the branch through the usual channels.
