DWP Management’s Insult to FTA Staff Facing Redundancy 13/08/2010

Posted by pcsdwpsheffield in Uncategorized.

A letter recently issued to branch members – more proof that there is little respect for the hard work undertaken by our FTA staff.

All members,

Just to inform you that PCS is aware of the recent advert that has been circulated to some headquarter functions, offering an option for substantive Band B/C staff to voluntarily transfer into JCP to cover the roles currently held by those staff on fixed term appointments. (NB: We cannot republish this internal advert online.)

We have demanded that Regional RECIPE Management withdraw the vacancy immediately as we believe it to be inappropriate.

We feel this is insulting to all our FTA colleagues, who continue to work tirelessly across the department under extreme pressure, despite the great levels of insecurity over their respective roles. At recent District Management meetings with TU and the recent RECIPE meeting no mention of this approach has been made. Further to this we have been informed that there is a possibility of some FTA contracts being extended. The union will continue to campaign and argue for all FTA staff in Jobcentre Plus to be made permanent to continue to deal with the economic downturn, as they were recruited.

Furthermore, we feel that those presently in Sheffield Contact Centre, should be given priority over Head Office colleagues for transfer to local Jobcentres. There are some staff who it has been identified cannot work on the telephones and are covered by DDA and numerous others who have voluntary transfers into the Customer Service Directorate. These staff have recently been through a ruthless transformation from BDC and many of whom were originally informed they would have options to transfer if they wished to not work in a Contact Centre.

To clarify the TUS position we feel that offering these vacancies are at this time is extremely insensitive and therefore this should have been left until the position for the FTA staff has been further clarified. If then there are opportunities in CSD, those in Sheffield Contact Centre should be given priority. Those covered by DDA and identified as being unable to work on the telephones and wish to work in CSD should be found roles above the head count as per guidance.
