Dear Members,

Next week (w.c. 27/9) is PCS National Young Workers Week, and the branch are holding a ‘Young Workers Roadshow’ around Sheffield offices every day during the week to publicise it.

What’s Happening In Your Office, and when?

At each of the following venues there will be an information stall, with several branch union reps including the Young Members Officer, and a wealth of PCS literature and information, specifically regarding Young Workers’ issues.

The reps will also be available to discuss workplace issues, and in particular any concerns that Young Members or prospective members have.

  • Mon 27th Sept – Bailey Court canteen: 11-2
  • Tues 28th Sept – Cavendish Court upper floor canteen: 11-2
  • Weds 29th Sept – Eastern Avenue: 12-2
  • Thurs 30th Sept – Hartshead Square Third Floor canteen: 11-2
  • Fri 1st Oct – Hillsborough Jobcentre canteen: 12-2

If you work at Premier House, Chapeltown, Woodhouse or Steel City House, we have not had the facility to organise an event in your workplace. However, if you would like to speak to the Young Members Officer I am only too happy to arrange to meet with you in the week following Young Workers Week if you contact me (Rosie Huzzard) by email. You are also welcome to attend any of the other events if you are able.

What’s it all about?

The Young Members Network campaigns for young workers’ rights and issues in the workplace in PCS. You can find out more at the stalls or from your local rep.

Current issues of particular concern are:

· Fixed Term Appointment contracts – these are particularly relevant as many of those who have taken up these positions are young workers who will be left without a job after the end of their contracts. PCS is campaigning to make these staff permanent. If you are an FTA member of staff please come and talk to us on the stall.

· Cuts and unemployment – young people are often on the sharp end of public sector cuts. Cuts to young peoples’ services such as Connexions and the Jobcentre Plus youth unemployment schemes leaves many young people without prospects or training, and this shows with the youth unemployment figures, which currently stand at around 2 million unemployed aged 18 – 24.

· NUVOS – the recent action taken over the Civil Service Compensation Scheme is to protect existing schemes and gain the best possible outcome for all in case of redundancies. Unfortunately due to detrimental changes to the pensions scheme, all those who have started with DWP since 2007 are on much worse conditions than their longer-serving colleagues. This has an obviously higher effect on younger members of staff, and we must campaign not only to protect existing rights, but also to bring NUVOS staff up to the level of their colleagues on the older pension schemes.

· Discrimination – young people are often discriminated against in the workplace, and find it very difficult to gain the same amount of respect as their older colleagues. Regardless of lifestyle, commitments, or experience, young people are often subject to mistrust and disrespect in the workplace. Young people are often overlooked for progression opportunities, and are often dismissed as ‘not having been here long enough’. Furthermore young people are often considered to be more likely to call in sick with a hangover, be the last in line for annual leave choices, or be flexible with working hours, for a few examples. Such presumptions are unfair and discriminatory.

We encourage all members to come and see the stalls and speak to the reps (regardless of age!) as it’s important we all understand each others’ issues.

We will also be giving away the drinks discount tickets for the Branch Social at the end of the week. Please see this link to the map, as the one on the previous email to the branch wasn’t working! http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=149-151+west+street,+sheffield,+uk&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.534108,56.337891&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=149-151+West+St,+Sheffield,+South+Yorkshire+S1+4EW,+United+Kingdom&z=16

Please also encourage any  colleagues who aren’t union members to come and talk to us because we will have membership forms with us.

Hope to see you next week,

Rosie Huzzard
