The latest news for members in DWP and CMEC.

Campaigners, including PCS, calling for a crackdown on tax avoidance as an alternative to the cuts, have welcomed the introduction of a general anti avoidance rule. Pressure to close loopholes has come from the PCS alternative to the cuts campaign and from recent protests at Top Shop and Vodaphone. News this week of attempts to move Cadbury’s profits offshore has also provoked widespread condemnation. No-one likes to see tax dodging. The new measures should bring in an extra £2 billion over four years.13,000 tax inspector jobs are due to be cut when they could have been chasing the whopping £70 billion a year of criminally evaded tax, the £25 billion avoided and the £25 billion not paid.

TPIP dispute – management offer talks to settle our dispute

In the face of hundreds of angry members on the 7 remaining TPIP sites voting to strike, DWP management have offered concentrated talks aimed at settling this long running dispute.

Real talks started

PCS met management this week and at last started to make some progress on the many issues concerning members on the 7 TPIP sites in particular but also throughout the Contact Centre Directorate.

Members demand to be listened to

PCS members with decades of experience and commitment working for the DWP have felt ignored in this decision and are demanding to be listened to.

Management have agreed to talk to PCS about greater flexibility around working hours and breaks, improved job design, what non telephony work can be brought into CCD and reducing pressures around targets and real time management.

Good faith sign

As a sign of their commitment to bring in improvements management agreed to immediately offer greater flexibility at the start of the working day, locally agreed arrangements for lunch breaks on the 4 TPIP sites operating Workforce Manager and to delay the extension of opening times at the sites currently being transformed (Chorlton and Makerfield).

The talks must succeed

Legally PCS must call a strike within 28 days of members voting for action. Management have granted a 28 day extension (the maximum the law allows) to allow the talks to continue. If these talks fail PCS will have no choice other than to call a strike in January – the busiest time of the year. That can be avoided if management now listen.PCS have made it plain that management must try hard now to find a solution to this long running dispute that PCS members will be able to accept.

Vote YES to keep CSCS

The CSCS ballot across the whole civil service began this week with ballot papers issued and workplace meetings to discuss the issues. The National Executive Committee are recommending that members vote YES to both questions in the consultative ballot to defend the CSCS and to defend our jobs by stopping the government from being able to sack civil servants on the cheap. Scrapping CSCS is part of the government’s cuts strategy.

Fight the cuts

As the cuts start to bite the anger people are feeling and the determination to find an alternative to the cuts is becoming more widespread. Thousands of students took to the streets this week to protest at being priced out of a university education as the government slashed the education budget and voted to triple fees to an unaffordable £9K. Widespread resistance to the cuts is growing. Check out the PCS website to see what you can do to support protests in your area.
